Ashley Tsuruoka is a writer of words & sounds from NYC living in Tokyo. Her collaborative poetry projects, research papers, and immersive music-poetry pieces have been presented in the USA and Japan, including ICMC 2019 in New York, ELO Conference & Media Arts Festival 2020 in Florida, and Inter BEE 2021 & 2022 in Chiba, Japan. As a performing artist, she performs music and poetry pieces around New York and most recently, Shibuya WWW in Tokyo.

​Ashley pursued studies in creative & professional writing and received a Masters in music from New York University. She has written articles, press releases, and biographies for artists, musicians, and creative organizations. As a teaching artist, she organizes group poetry workshops for children to nurture a natural enjoyment for reading and self-expression through words and art. Ashley is currently writing a book of digital poetry.

    “Song Cycling” with Ensemble Consensus

    "Song Cycling" is an interactive poetry and musical performance. Ensemble Consensus will collaboratively write what we call “poetic scores” using graphics and texts. The poetic scores will be iteratively interpreted into song by the ensemble through musical improvisation.

    The live performance of this poem utilizes a software system called Soundwriter, which was developed with the goal of enriching the oral storytelling experience through music. We will demonstrate how Soundwriter’s system analyzes the poem “Lulling Waters” through its lexical and auditory features.
